Investigations of methyl lactate in the presence of reverse micelles by vibrational spectroscopy and circular dichroism

2012

Abstract The FT-IR and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of ( S )- and -( R )-methyl lactate have been recorded for neat samples and at various concentrations in CCl 4 and DMSO solutions. These spectra are used to analyse the FT-IR and VCD spectra of methyl lactates in presence of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) in CCl 4 , where the surfactant molecules are known to form reverse micelles. Some tendency of methyl lactate to interact with AOT micellar aggregates is observed, but not as well defined as previously observed for dimethyl tartrate in analogous circumstances. Besides, near infrared (NIR) absorption and VCD data have been obtained for most of the above system…

Nanomateriales basados en lantánidos: caracterización y visualización

2022

Effect of Heat on the Adsorption Properties of Silica Gel

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Engineering and Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.ijetch.org/papers/416-T886.pdf Open access. Adsorption properties of silica gel have been attributed to the surface hydroxyl groups of silica gel. Some hydroxyl groups are free standing and called free silanol groups. Some are hydrogen bonded to neighbouring silanol groups. Christy has shown that a high silanol number and a balanced concentration proportionality between these two different types of hydroxyl groups is necessary for effective adsorption of water molecules. Thermal treatment of silica gel samples alters the proportions of these g…

Rapid and eco-friendly synthesis of graphene oxide-silica nanohybrids

2014

The increasing interest in Graphene oxide (GO) is due to many issues: the presence of both sp2-conjugated atoms and oxygen-containing functional groups provides a strong hydrophilicity and the possibility to further functionalize it with other molecules (i.e. π-π interactions covalent attachment etc.) [1]. Furthermore since the GO is biocompatible and noncytotoxic many studies have been recently focused on the development of GO-based nanodevices for bioimaging DNA detection drug delivery. Due to their low cytotoxicity and large internal surface area silica nanoparticles have been taken into account as promising material for biolabeling and drug loading/delivery. Particular consideration has recently been demonstrated for GO-silica composites because of the potentialities for electrical applications their chemical inertia and stability toward ions exposure. The possibility to combine the extraordinary properties of GO and silica offers several advantages for the realization of nanoprobes for biological applications and of biosensor [12]. The strategy for the fabrication of GO-nanosilica nanohybrids can be schematized as follows: (i) synthesis of GO by oxidizing graphite powder with the method described by Marcano et al. [3] (ii) Preparation of oxygen-loaded silica nanoparticles by thermal treatments in controlled atmosphere in order to induce high NIR emission at 1272 nm from high purity silica nanoparticles. (iii) preparation of GrO-silica nanohybrid films via rapid solvent casting in water. The nanohybrids were tested by XPS FTIR Raman analysis UV photoluminescence analysis TGA Zeta potential measurements electrical tests AFM and SEM. Several nanohybrids were prepared by combining two different typologies of GO and two different samples of silica.

Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) characterization of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from different rearing systems

2009

The present study aimed to predict by NIRS the proximate chemical composition and some carcass traits of sea bass coming from 11 farms with different rearing systems (extensive, intensive in land-based basins, sea cages) and located in northern (Friuli, Veneto), central (Tuscany) and southern (Puglia and Sicily) Italy. NIRS analysis of freeze dried sea bass fillets gave fairly good predictions of slaughter weight and fillet yield (R2cv=0.48-0.55), while results for carcass yield were poor. NIRS analysis was highly predictive for the condition factor (R2cv=0.790, SECV=0.09) and for water, ether extract and gross energy showing high correlations (R2cv>0.90) with NIR spectral infor- mation and…

Accomplishing the requirements within the new decree 159/2016: Comparative study of eddy currents induced in a human phantom moving near different MR…

2019

Purpose. In order to provide adequate risk-reducing procedures for MRI personnel (radiographers, anaesthetists, physicists, nurses, technicians, cleaners, etc.), different studies have been developed in the past years. Further to those, in the present work risk assessment concerned with currents induced by non-uniform static magnetic fields in MRI operators performing different tasks in prox imity of the scanner has been investigated across a set of different 1.5 T MRI scanners. Methods. The first step has been to empirically map the magnetic field around the different scanners and to select a proper adult human body as a heterogeneous volume conductor model. Then, upon observing the way ta…

A Curcumin-BODIPY Dyad and Its Silica Hybrid as NIR Bioimaging Probes

2022

In this paper we describe the synthesis of a novel bichromophoric system in which an efficient photoinduced intercomponent energy transfer process is active. The dyad consists of one subunit of curcumin and one of BODIPY and is able to emit in the far-red region, offering a large Stokes shift, capable of limiting light scattering processes for applications in microscopy. The system has been encapsulated in MCM-41 nanoparticles with dimensions between 50 and 80 nm. Both the molecular dyad and individual subunits were tested with different cell lines to study their effective applicability in bioimaging. MCM-41 nanoparticles showed no reduction in cell viability, indicating their biocompatibil…

Moving inside a MRI room: A risk assessment analysis

2018

Moving across the stray magnetic field generated by a medical magnetic resonance imaging system may induce electric stimulation near or even beyond the threshold of physiological significance and adequate risk-reducing procedures for the involved personnel may be re quired. With this in mind, a set of different scanners has been analysed. Results suggest that a 1.5 T magnet may be expected in general to comply with the requirements of the currently in force European Electromagnetic Fields Directive for ensuring the health and safety of workers.
